Map Alkmaar
Alkmaar is located in the western part of Holland in the province of Noord-Holland (North-Holland). The city gained city rights in the year 1254 and was freed from the Spaniards on October 8 in 1573 after a fierce battle. Alkmaar was the first city in the Netherlands to be freed from the Spanish occupation. This liberation day is still celebrated as of today.
Alkmaar has around 95,000 inhabitants and is very known for its cheese market that is held every year between April and October. You can find all sorts of cheese, and of course the Dutch cheeses like Edam cheese and Gouda cheese.
