Map Delft
Delft is located in the western part of Holland in the province of South-Holland (Zuid-Holland). The city gained city rights in the year 1246. William of Nassau ("William the Silent"), the Prince of Orange, (1533-1584) choose Delft as his residence in 1562. William of Nassau is seen as the founder of The Netherlands, he was the leader in the 16th century of the fightings against the Spanish ruler, the Eighty Years' War. Because Delft had defensive city walls the Prince choose this city as his residence and head quarters. In 1584 William of Orange was murdered by Balthasar Gerards in the Prinsenhof. The Prinsenhof can still be visited today. William of Orange Nassau was buried in the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) in Delft, the church is still the burial place of the Royal family as of today.
