Leiden (Leyden) is located in the western part of Holland in the province of South-Holland (in Dutch: Zuid-Holland). The city forms an important part of Holland's history. The relieve of the Spanish siege in 1574 is celebrated on the third of October by a parade, a fair and eating the traditional food of herring and white bread and hutspot.
One of the most important pieces of Dutch history contributed by Leiden was the Dutch constitution. Johan Rudolf Thorbecke (1798-1872), born in the city of Zwolle, wrote the Dutch constitution in 1848 in Leiden.
