Map MaastrichtMaarstricht is located on both sides of the river Maas (Meuse) in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands between Belgium and Germany. The origins of the name Maastricht lie in the Roman time, when the Romans under Caesar Augustus built a bridge across the river Meuse. The Latin name for the city was: Trajectum Ad Mosam (crossing of the Meuse). Maastricht was the first city with medieval city rights, it received these rights in 1204. Nowadays the city has about 125,000 inhabitants. Because of its location Maastricht is somewhat more focused on Belgium and Germany than on the rest of the Netherlands, the city has a sort of "non-Dutch character". In Maastricht, in the year 1992, the "Maastricht treaty" was signed, a treaty leading to the creation of the Euro.
