Map ZwolleThe city of Zwolle is situated in the in the eastern part of the province of Overijssel. Zwolle gained city rights in the year 1230 and officially joined the Hanseatic league in 1407. The Roman Catholic "Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming-basilica", build in the fifteenth century, has a massive tower, almost 300 feet in height. The tower, called in Dutch "de Peperbus" (translated from Dutch: "the Pepperbox"), is one of the tallest church towers in the Netherlands. Nearby Zwolle, on "de Agnietenberg" (translated from Dutch: "the Hill of Saint Agnes"), stood the Augustinian monastery in which Thomas à Kempis lived and died in 1471. Thomas à Kempis was the author of "De imitatio Christi" (Imitation of Christ). The relics of Thomas à Kempis are since 2006 in the "Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming-basilica" (Our Lady Ascension basilica).
