Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712)

Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712), despite being an artist, was a very practical man, since he made himself meritorious by introducing the use of streetlamps, and by inventing the fire-engine.

Van der Heyden had a fine sense of linear and aerial perspective, and the delicate minuteness of detail in his pictures is always kept in subordination to the general effect.
