Lodovico Guicciardini description of the Low CountriesLodovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant and historian born in Florence on August 19, 1521, and nephew of the famous politician and historian writer Francesco Guicciardini.

Guicciardini travelled in the 16th century through Europe, visiting countries, cities and towns, and wrote about them in his books. In 1542 he settled down in Antwerp.

Lodovico Guicciardini became most famous of his writings of the Netherlands and Belgium in his book: "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, altrimenti detti Germania inferiore" (description of the Low Countries, otherwise called Lower Germany) in the Italien language from 1567. His books were illustrated with beautiful maps of regions, towns and cities in the Low countries.

His work got translated in German, Dutch and English and became very popular in the 16th and 17th century.

Guicciardini died in Antwerp on March 22, 1589.
